Our open letter to Merton Council on the proposed Clarion development for Majestic Way

We have joined with Mitcham Cricket Green Community & Heritage to write a joint open letter to the Leader of Merton Council regarding the proposed 11 storey development on Majestic Way, asking for a rethink and new approach before it is too late.

Our open letter to Merton Council Leader Ross Garrod makes it clear that the planning application Clarion has submitted for flats rising to 11 storeys on Majestic Way is entirely inappropriate for the heart of Mitcham Village and ignores the Local Plan. It is, we say, a “massive overdevelopment which lacks design merit and overwhelms its surroundings, including St Mark’s Primary School."

Together with Mitcham Cricket Green Community & Heritage we are urging Merton Council to support a rethink of the plans, and to be “firm, clear and proactive in setting the highest possible standards for private developers."

We are also asking that a firm stance is taken to prevent what is, as things currently stand likely to be several years of blight of one of our key shopping streets as the side of Majestic Way that Clarion owns is empty of shops.

This site is too important to the future of Mitcham Village to be treated with anything but the utmost respect, which includes not flouting the council’s own tall buildings policy and having the very highest design standards. The current proposal falls well short of the mark.
