A planning application has been submitted for the new Mitcham Bridge over the Wandle. We have joined with Mtcham Society and Wandle Valley Forum to put in a joint objection.
Two designs were proposed in a public vote, and the least popular by far is going forward to as the proposed design.
The proposed design will result in the loss of 12 mature trees, taking of protected Metropolitan Open Land, and the desctuction of the historic wall that protects Ravensbury Park from pollution and traffic noise. Despite the extra land take the bridge fails to provide adequate space for cyclists, forcing them onto a pavement shared with pedestrians. This is a poor response to current climate and active travel requirements.
We're also surprised the council can't get the name of the bridge right, failing to call it Mitcham Bridge.
